A 30-year-old woman from Woodbridge died early on Saturday after opening the door of the Jeep she was traveling in and falling onto a road in Dumfries.
Police arrived in the area of Williamstown Drive and US 1 at 1:43 a.m. to find the victim, Stephanie De La Cruz Moreno Medina, unconscious, Prince William County Police 1st Sgt. Jonathan Perok said.
Firefighters administered first aid and took her to the hospital, where she died in the morning.
The investigation revealed that the driver of a 2015 Jeep Wrangler, Gustavo A. Barajona Benitez, 38, of Dumfries, was northbound on US 1 when he braked to turn right onto Williamstown Drive.
“When the vehicle braked, the passenger opened the door and exited the vehicle onto the roadway while the vehicle was still in motion,” Perok said.
Barajona Benitez was arrested at the scene and charged with driving under the influence and no operator’s license, Peroc said.
Police believe the victim was also intoxicated at the time, Perok said.
Investigators ask anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact the police.
