Who is behind the “Stop the Violence Team” in Norfolk?

You can see a man with a megaphone and a mission, who has a sign saying “Stop the violence”. His name is Bilal Muhammad, president of the Stop Violence team.

“We will see how the crime will happen, we will hear about it in the news, and we will go immediately to the area where it took place,” – said Mohammed.

He and his team, aware of the dangers of being there so soon after the shooting, say response times are not just important. It is said to be part of the key.

“I have spoken out. Right in the middle of where this situation happened. I told the community that neighborhood, we need to change that. We are talking about a young man lying on the ground covered with a sheet, about a young lady with a sheet. Pointless murders for no reason. We need to change our understanding, our love and care for our community, ”Muhammad said.

Many people asked him, “How can you understand what it means to lose a loved one because of violence? How do you know how you feel wearing my shoes now? ”

Well, long before “Stop the Violence,” Bilal says he himself had a pair of those shoes.

“I was 17 when I lost my brother in 1982 to gun violence,” Bilal told 10 On Your Side. “So I can sympathize with the families who lost a loved one at that moment.”

Bilal admits that yes, it’s hard work, but he knows the possibility of a better tomorrow is worth it.

“We don’t want to come to an area where someone is lying on the ground. We want you to come to a place where crime and violence do not occur. Let’s sit down at a table, organize an event that can help kids in elementary or high school. So I hope we can save a few of them. “

“We need to change our understanding, our love and care for our community. For the community as a whole. People, in general, let us show compassion. Let’s stop this. “
