Richmond, Virginia (WAVY) – On Wednesday, Virginia lawmakers approved a bill that allows college athletes to sign support agreements.
Under the law, universities and colleges cannot block or penalize athletes who sign these contracts. It also means that institutions cannot reduce or cancel student scholarships due to support agreements.
Players may not use the name or logo of their university without permission.
Athletes are prohibited from representing brands of alcohol, tobacco, adult entertainment, weapons and casinos.
It was held in the Senate on February 1 and in Chamber 96-4 on March 2.
