The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of the fired West Point teacher

West Point, Virginia (WRIC) – A West Point teacher who was fired for not using a predominantly identical student pronoun will now hear his case in the Virginia Supreme Court.

West Point The school board voted unanimously to dismiss Peter Wlaminga former French language teacher at the school, following a board meeting in December 2018.

Vlaming was fired from a 6-year stay at the school for not using masculine pronouns when addressing a male-speaking student.

“My religious faith dictates that I should love and respect everyone, whether I agree with them or not. Because we are all created in the image of God, ”Wlaming said, reading an introductory statement prepared during a public hearing before he was fired by the school board in 2018.

“I also know and agree with the limitations in the speech of teachers of public schools on matters of religious faith. I represent the state in my role as a public school teacher and therefore speak with a certain authority. This power should not be used to promote any particular worldview, and I do not. But we are here today because a specific worldview is being imposed on me, ”he continued.

The Flemings were right before appealed to the Supreme Court of Virginia Lawyers Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).is the conservative Christian “nonprofit law firm that seeks to defend religious freedom, freedom of speech, parental rights, and the sanctity of life,” representing Wlamingo after King William County Court closed the case.

Wlaming’s lawyer had previously told 8News: “Public schools have nothing to do with forcing people to express ideological beliefs that they do not hold. It’s not just about the pronoun; it is about forcing someone to approve an ideology at the risk of losing their job. It is neither legal nor constitutional. ”

A date for the Virginia Supreme Court hearing has not yet been set.
