PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Ahead of Black History Month, staff at the Virginia Museum of Modern Art are sharing details about an upcoming exhibit.
An exhibition featuring the works of artist Kari Walker will open at the museum.
Curator Heather Hakimzadeh says Walker’s work addresses social issues related to gender, race and black history. She says that her work is a topic that needs to be talked about today.
“Her work really addresses a topic that needs to be talked about in our region. We have a region so rich in history, from the first planting of slavery at Point Comfort in the Hamptons to the plantations to the Underground Railroad to the slave prisons, and she faces all of these issues in her work,” she said.
Hakimzadeh also says they are proud to present a space to discuss her work.
The exhibition will open to the public on March 9 and will run until June 11. It is also free and open to the public.
