Sales of recreational marijuana may begin in September this year – until the opening of a full legal market in 2024 – under a bill passed by the State Senate.
“This ensures that consumers can purchase safe regulated products legally until a full market is opened,” said the bill’s sponsor, Senator Adam Abbin, of Ad-Alexandria.
The measure must be approved by the State House of Delegates.
Under the bill, in September, adults will be able to purchase marijuana at an existing dispensary without a prescription.
Under current law, adults need a prescription to buy marijuana, although they may legally own up to one ounce of it.
