BLACKSBURG, Virginia (WFXR) – A hot moment earlier this week at a Montgomery County School Board meeting is now attracting national attention.
On Thursday, February 17, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, Texas made a retweet the right podcaster who discussed a dispute that erupted during a school board meeting in Montgomery County on Tuesday, February 15th.
Alesia’s father Here says the drama at Tuesday’s event boils down to the hypocrisy of school board members.
“They said we had to follow Governor Nortem’s order, so we had to. This year a new governor is coming to the office, and they suddenly do not want to follow the orders of the executive power, ”Vot said.
At a previous school board meeting earlier this month, Woote said she and The Second Monday Constitution Group, of which she is a founder, sat in the front row of the room and took off their masks in protest. Montgomery County School Board Chair Sue Cass reportedly yelled at them during the interaction.
However, Tuesday’s dispute between Cass and Vot was a little more personal than that.
According to Cass, she received vicious emails and phone calls regarding her position on the school board.
“It was very inclined towards me and indicated an attempt to humiliate me to force me to leave the school board,” Cass said.
Vout says it’s about allowing parents to choose what’s best for their children, and not ignore the governor’s orders.
On Wednesday, February 16, Governor Glen Yangkin signed a new law requiring schools to make masks optional no later than March 1.
Vout says she feels the governor’s decision has returned power to her parents.
“I am not right. I try to do it right. I do the right thing for our children, and I stand up and call for hypocrisy, if there is hypocrisy, because we are all tired of it – these are the rules for you, not for me, ”Vot said.
However, Cass disagrees with Vot, saying it is a matter of respect.
“She used a forum that should be designed for the community to express her concerns about the school, students and staff, and she used that forum for her own political purposes,” Cass said.
In an interview with Vaught, Kelsey Jean-Baptiste of WFXR News asked her parents about the purpose of her speech.
Wout says she never attacked Cass, adding that she came with specific intentions to express her opinion and urge several board members about their hypocrisy.
For example, Wout says she was going to summon Montgomery County Public School Head Dr. Mark Miar for providing training to all county teachers on implicit bias.
According to Voto, she fought for family rights as well as for change. She says she wants to see fighters on the school board grounds.
“They have to listen to their parents. We are parents, we dictate how they grow, how they get an education, and we pay taxes for these schools to be built. We pay these salaries, we elect these council members to councils, ”Vot said.
However, Cass wants to emphasize that she and school board members care about society, students and parents.
“We need to realize that people on school boards are volunteers who want to serve our community,” Cass said.
