A Virginia police officer faced a felony after police reported that his young son shot himself with his father’s weapon.
NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia – A Virginia police officer is facing a felony after police said his young son was fatally shot with his father’s weapon.
The Daily Press reported that on February 8, a Newport News police officer was charged with allowing minors to gain access to firearms.
The incident took place in October at the home of 25-year-old Stephon Christian McCombs Sr.
The dead boy was 2 years old.
The court said McCombs told detectives he had come home and put the gun without a holster next to him on the couch, but “forgot that the firearm was still not secured” when his children returned home.
He heard a shot as he entered the kitchen. The boy died at the hospital.
