LYNCHBURG, Virginia – People all over the world, including in Southwest and Central Virginia, have expressed support for Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.
On Wednesday night, students at Lynchburg University held a prayer vigil for Ukrainians.
Dozens of students and faculty gathered to show their support for Ukraine. President of the Association of Student Self-Government Matthew Gillett came up with the idea to hold a prayer vigil.
“How can we come together and honor our students, but also pray for peace and help students understand what is happening across the Atlantic,” he said.
During the vigil, people prayed for peace in Ukraine. 12 prayers of different religions were read, as well as a minute of silence.
“Our student body is very interfaith. We have Christians, we have Jewish students. So, when we hold such events, we want to make sure that everyone is included and not only that, but we make sure that we represent all religious groups fairly, ”said the university chaplain, Father Nathan Albert.

University President Alison Morrison-Shetlar addressed the event and praised the students who were there for taking the position.
“You have a positive impact on people by expressing your support in any way. So thank you for being here tonight, ”said President Morrison-Shetlar.
The organizers hope that this event will bring students a sense of unity and peace in difficult times.
“I hope they have taken away the understanding of peace and the understanding of the role they can play. Even if it’s as simple as meditation and meditation, and how they can better understand what’s going on abroad without being absorbed by it, ”Gillette said.
