(NEXSTAR) – Omicron cases are finally subsiding after a highly infectious variant invaded the United States, leaving millions with antibodies to the coronavirus.
Some people who have been cured of omicron, especially those who have previously been vaccinated and reinforced, may feel invincible when it comes to re-infection.
A a recent study Researchers from the University of Oregon Health and Science (OHSU) believe that the combination of a breakthrough infection and a vaccine could lead to a hybrid “super immunity” – regardless of whether the infection occurs before or after vaccination.
So how long can a healthy person with a new set of antibodies to COVID-19 expect his immune system to continue?
“About three to six months,” said Dr. Peter Chin Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. “It’s kind of like when some people have antibodies start to go down and they’re potentially at risk of re-infection.”
However, if the antibodies start to decrease, it does not mean that the immune system has forgotten to fight the virus.
“Antibodies are important to prevent this first attack, but the internal immune system, T cells and B cells, they remain active for a long time,” Dr. Chin Hoon said.
Dr Anthony Foci, the White House’s chief medical adviser, said this week that we heading out “the full-scale phase of the COVID-19 pandemic,” and we can probably expect local authorities – and even individuals – to start making more decisions on their own to fight viruses in the future.
In fact, we could even see “a good three to six months of vacation at COVID, unless there is another option,” Dr. Chin Hoon said.
As omicron antibodies begin to decline in the fall or winter, he added, people who have been vaccinated, strengthened and have natural immunity will be better.
“If people only rely on the natural effects of the infection and they got the original version two years ago, they can get sick because these T cells are like getting a single dose of the vaccine,” Chin Hong said. “But if you get a combination vaccine and a natural infection, it’s the Holy Grail. This is hybrid immunity. That’s the best thing. “
