INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANAPOLIS (WAVIES) – Another Sunday of last-minute heroics from Taylor Heinicke.
Old Dominion’s all-time leading rusher dashed across the goal line from one yard out for a tying touchdown with 22 seconds left in Indianapolis and Joey Sly kicked the extra point in the Washington Commanders’ 17-16 win over the Colts.
Heinicke, who completed 23 of 31 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown, orchestrated a nine-play drive that began at his own 11-yard line with just 2:39 remaining. The sophomore running back found Curtis Samuel for the crucial fourth-down conversion and hit Terry McLaren, who climbed the ladder and made a spectacular grab to set up the game-winning drive.
The Commanders (4-4) are now 2-0 with Heinicke as the starting quarterback and will face former starter Kirk Cousins next weekend when the Minnesota Vikings travel to Landover.
