George Washington is 290 years old, and the overseers of his Mount Vernon estate are holding a home party.
George Washington is 290 years old, and caretakers of his Mount Vernon estate, Virginia, are hosting a home party.
Several events in honor of the first president’s birthday will be held on President’s Day, with a personal celebration on Monday and a virtual celebration on Tuesday.
“We’re opening the estate for free both days, and we’re going to have big demonstrations from the commander and the head of security,” said Matt Branney, vice president of media and communications for Mount Vernon.
Some activities include demonstrations of how to make cupcakes – Washington’s favorite breakfast – and activities for children.
“On the 22nd we are holding a virtual holiday for those who can’t join us in person at 7pm,” Armor said. Capacity limits will apply to personal events, so he encourages people to sign up in advance.
Washington’s birthday is one of the biggest holidays at the estate, the first being the fourth of July, according to Armor.
“Get ready – it will be cold. But we like to take people outside, ”Brani said.
The pandemic forced Mount Vernon to significantly reduce last year’s holiday, but a new tradition emerged.
“Last year we had a much shorter reception in those days, so the holiday was not as big as we expected this year,” said Branny. “But we had the first annual virtual holiday on Washington’s birthday, [which is on] 22nd, so this is a tradition we continue this year. “
