Chesterfield County, Virginia (WRIC) – Gasoline prices in the Richmond area have jumped at least 20 cents overnight, and experts say it could get worse.
GasBuddy oil analyst Patrick DeHaan told 8News that current high prices could continue to rise to $ 4 a gallon.
He said the surge in wholesale gas and oil prices on Tuesday was one of the reasons for such high rates on pumps. DeHaan said the surge combined with the situation between Russia and Ukraine means those prices could jump another 10-20 cents in the coming days.
DeHaan said prices could remain high if the situation between Russia and Ukraine does not change in the near future.
Prices are hitting the pockets of people like restaurant worker Roshad Harvey Jr., who has to use top-quality gas in his car.
“It costs almost $ 60 for this little car,” he said. “For that price, it’s like someone doing construction work, making a lot of money or something.”
Several gas stations around Chesterfield sell gas for about $ 3.55, which is above the Richmond average of $ 3.47 for conventional unleaded.
Joseph Sauer owns S&K Technology, Inc. in Richmond and said prices are outrageously damaging to small businesses like him. “It will deprive us of business.”
“I’ve never seen it so bad,” he said. “As long as we pay taxes, with increased taxes and food and everything else, sending guys everywhere, it’s worth a fortune.”
He explains the high gas prices by the reason why his profits are falling to 30%.
“If we lose our small business in America, we will lose the foundation of what it was built on,” he said.
You can use several apps to save on gas, including GasBuddy, Gas Guru, Waze, Dash and MapQuest Gas Prices. DeHaan recommends subscribing to Pay with GasBuddy, a gas card discount program that allows customers to save up to 25 cents per gallon on gas.
To save money, AAA recommends:
- Perform regular vehicle inspections
- Keep the tires properly inflated
- Do not buy gas of middle class or top grade unless recommended by your operation manual
- Avoid idling
- Maintaining speed mode
- Consolidation trips
