President Joe Biden plans to announce Tuesday night that the United States is banning Russian planes from entering its airspace in retaliation for invading Ukraine, according to two people familiar with the decision.
The move comes after similar actions by Canada and the European Union this week. People spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss Biden’s speech on the state of the Union in advance.
In remarks issued by the White House on the eve of the speech, Biden makes an ominous warning that without the consequences of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression will not be restrained in Ukraine.
“Throughout our history, we have learned this lesson – if dictators do not pay the price for their aggression, they cause even more chaos,” says Biden. “They keep moving. And the cost and threats to America and the world continue to rise. ”
The ban will be included in addition to the wide range of sanctions that the United States, Europe and other countries have imposed against Russia, which is expected to hit the country’s economy.
On Sunday, the European Union and Canada announced the closure of airspace for Russian airlines and private planes owned by wealthy Russians.
Russia’s largest airline, Aeroflot, said Monday it had suspended flights to New York, Washington, Miami and Los Angeles until Wednesday because of a Canadian decision.
Associated Press writers Daria Litvinova of Moscow and Frank Jordans of Berlin contributed to the report.
