A steeple falls from a church in Virginia Beach, wedged into an apartment complex

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Virginia Beach, VA) — Crews are on the scene after a spire brought down a church in Virginia Beach Friday night.

A spire fell from the top of Galilee Episcopal Church at 41st Street and Pacific Avenue, according to a police report.

10 On Your Side’s Michelle Wolf reports that the spire is now wedged between the church and the Holly Hill apartment complex next door.

During the day, winds gusted to 45-55 mph in Hampton Roads. Several trees fell in some places, there were power outages.

Meteorologist Ricky Matthews reports that the winds will slowly ease overnight, but we will continue to see gusts of 35-50mph early in the night until about 3-4am

High Wind Warnings in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday. Winds will ease as Saturday progresses, with the southwest wind warming around 5 to 10 mph. There is minimal wind on Saturday, but the breeze returns late Sunday, but the wind shouldn’t be as strong as today.
