A meal for veterans and their families is held at Svoboda’s new farm

BUCHANAN, VA. – This is a tradition that started in 2016 – every year New Freedom Farm hosts a free meal for veterans and their families.

“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger, I started my first year with 17 people and then it went to 64 and 155 and 257 and it just keeps growing and growing and growing,” said Lois Dawn Fritz, founder/director of New Freedom. Farm.

It’s just one of the ways the nonprofit strives to achieve its mission: to provide shelter and trauma rehabilitation to veterans and first responders.

“A lot of times the holidays are really stressful, especially for veterans who have been injured, and it’s a safe place for everyone to go and be themselves and be around like-minded people,” she added. “Food is more than food, it’s about fellowship and being around others on Thanksgiving.”

“Being a soldier and being deployed and eating with your brothers in arms is the same thing. You have nowhere to go,” veteran Andrew Kintgen said.

Kintgen attended the event in 2019 and enjoyed it so much that he is now returning as a volunteer. He is one of many veterans who find the event so impressive.

“The reaction is simply surprised, for example, by the fact that we have food in the barn. But these same people ask to have the same chair when they return and are served by the same person,” he added.

On Thanksgiving, New Freedom Farm is proud to give back.
