NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WRIC) — Former Newport News Police Sgt. arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of children in June pleaded guilty to three counts of child sex offenses in court on Thursday, September 22.
According to the Ministry of Justice, 39-year-old Michael J. Covey pleaded guilty after using a child to “participate in conduct of a sexual nature” so he could film and photograph the acts and share the images with the sex offender. in Ohio.
The photos showed an underage girl sleeping in a bed, with the covers pulled down to expose her thighs in one of the photos, court documents said. The documents continued, setting a scene of video files of the same girl sleeping in bed while a man masturbated next to her.
Court documents say the photos and videos were found on a sex offender’s phone in Ohio in a folder labeled “Fun.”
Of the eight counts of child sex crimes, Covey pleaded guilty to two counts of child sexual exploitation and one count of receiving child pornography, and is scheduled to be sentenced on February 22, 2023. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years. prison and a maximum penalty of 80 years in prison.
